A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE COMPANY'S BEGINNING
In 1920 Robert Hugh Marlin, a native of Monroe County, Indiana, started this company by trading a horse and buggy that was given to him as a wedding gift from his mother for a team of work horses. With borrowed equipment, he then began excavating around the Bloomington area including Indiana University. In 1922 he expanded to the Indianapolis area and worked on many Eli Lilly and city projects.

In the early 30's the business had grown to 32 teams of horses and one Model-T truck, enabling R.H. to expand to surrounding areas and other states. The mid 30's brought an idea of buying a small coal mine in Patricksburg, Indiana, which led to the purchase of an Osgood Dragline Crane to help in the coal mines.

The 40's saw the excavation of Camp Atterbury, near Columbus, which led to the purchase of 125 dump trucks. A second coal mine was bought in Owensboro, Kentucky, where he hauled coal to several large cities and small towns.

The purchase of 12 cranes became the beginning of the crane rental business for R.H. Marlin in the early 50's. During this time, the company worked at the Ford plant on Indy's east side and also worked downtown on the city's circle. Over the next two decades the company operated in many different cities in the Midwest, but has always called Indianapolis home.

In 1970 R.H. Marlin passed away at the early age of 67, leaving his wife Rosie, six sons and five daughters and their spouses to carry on the family business.

The company has grown over the years to more than 100 employees, offering many services such as, crane rental, excavating, sheet piling and demolition. Currently, R.H. Marlin, Inc. is owned by Charley and Ann (Marlin) Robertson and their family.

R.H. Marlin, Inc. would like to thank all of our customers for their past and present support through the years. We look forward to supplying your equipment needs in the future.
